ALLERGIES

Allergies affect up to 20 percent of the population and are caused by an overreaction of the body's immune system.  People inherit their increased ability to become allergic; however, what they are allergic to in the environment depends on the intensity and the variety of their exposures.  The allergic individual generates allergic antibody directed against common substances such as sagebrush pollen that do not adversely affect non-allergic individuals.  Common symptoms of allergy may be experienced in the upper respiratory tract including the nose, eyes, ears and sinuses; the lower respiratory tract including the lung; the gastrointestinal tract, the skin and other areas of the body.  Allergic symptoms and reactions can vary from mild and annoying to life threatening.  Treatment involves avoidance when possible, various medications and specific allergy immunotherapy-allergy shots.

ASTHMA

Asthma is a common disease throughout the world.  It affects approximately 15 million people in the United States, including up to five million children.  Asthma is a chronic lung condition with inflammation (swelling) of the airways of the lung, as well as increased sensitivity of the airways to a variety of things that cause obstruction to airflow in the lungs.  Allergies and asthma are often found together and in these cases, allergies often act as an aggravating factor that can make asthma worse.  Cigarette smoke, air pollution, viral respiratory infections, physical exertion and possibly emotional issues may also be a factor in asthma.

Our web site provides links to a variety of Allergy and Asthma Organizations, which will provide you with additional information.
